Sri Lanka is the destination everyone's about to discover.

There's a pattern to how a destination goes from "hidden gem" to "everyone's been now": a few years of word-of-mouth, a spike in flight searches, and then suddenly it's the top of everyone's group chat. Sri Lanka is somewhere in the middle of that curve right now, which makes this a genuinely good moment to go, before it fully arrives.

It fits more into one trip than seems fair

Sri Lanka is a small island with an unreasonable amount packed into it. In the space of two weeks you can go from misty hill country tea plantations to ancient cave temples to golden southern coastline, without the multi-flight logistics that a similarly varied trip through, say, Southeast Asia would require. The distances are short. The variety isn't.

Tuktuk

The trains alone are worth the trip

Ask anyone who's done the journey from Kandy to Ella and they'll bring up the train before you even ask. It winds through hill country tea estates, past waterfalls, over bridges perched on cliff edges, with the doors left open the whole way so you can sit with your legs hanging out and watch the country go by. It's regularly ranked among the most scenic train journeys anywhere, and it somehow still manages to undersell itself in photos.

The food deserves its own trip

Sri Lankan food gets overshadowed by its regional neighbours in a way that doesn't track once you've actually eaten it. Hoppers, the bowl-shaped fermented rice pancakes usually served with a fried egg cracked into the middle, deserve to be a global breakfast trend already. Add in the curries, built on coconut and a spice blend that's distinctly its own rather than a softer version of Indian or Thai cooking, and you've got a food scene that punches well above its recognition.

Why now?

Tourism to Sri Lanka has been steadily climbing back after a difficult few years, and infrastructure for travellers, trains, guesthouses, tour circuits, has kept pace without yet tipping into the overtouristed feel that's crept into parts of Bali or northern Thailand. That window doesn't stay open forever. Destinations that offer this much variety for this little hassle tend to get discovered fast once the word properly gets out.
