5 Things Nobody Tells You About Backpacking Vietnam

Vietnam Cycling

You've watched the TikToks. Motorbikes weaving through Hanoi traffic like a video game, banh mi stalls glowing at 2am, boats gliding through the limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay. All true, by the way. But there's a version of Vietnam that doesn't make it into the 15 second clips, and it's the version that actually changes how you experience the trip. Here's what we wish someone had told us.

1. The traffic isn't scary once you understand the rules (there just aren't many)

Crossing the road in Hanoi looks like an extreme sport from the outside. From the inside, it's simpler than it looks: walk slow, walk steady, never stop, never run. The bikes flow around you like water around a rock. The people who panic and freeze are the ones who nearly get hit, not the ones who commit. It takes one crossing to get it, and about four days before you're doing it without thinking!

2. The food regions genuinely taste different, not just "spicier in the south"

Everyone knows Vietnam has good food. Fewer people know that a bowl of pho in Hanoi and a bowl of pho in Ho Chi Minh City are almost different dishes. The north keeps it clean and simple, built on a clear broth that's had hours of care put into it. Head south and the same bowl arrives with a table of fresh herbs, bean sprouts, and lime on the side, built for you to customise. Neither is more "authentic" than the other. They're just different rooms in the same house, and travelling the length of the country means you get to taste the difference.

3. Halong Bay is stunning, and worth the crowds

Ha Long Bay gets all the attention, and it deserves plenty of it. But it also gets all the boats, and on a busy day it can feel super touristy. In saying this - it is ABSOLUTELY worth the hype! Stunning views of limestone cliffs and a gorgeous boat with the comfiest beds in the world? We’re in.

Sapa hike

4. Sa Pa in the rain is still worth it

Everyone hopes for blue skies over the rice terraces of Sa Pa, and when you get them, it's spectacular. But Sa Pa in mist has its own quiet magic that photos never quite capture: the terraces disappearing into cloud, water buffalo appearing out of nowhere on the trail, the whole valley gone soft and silent. Pack a rain jacket, adjust your expectations, and you'll leave with a completely different set of memories than the ones you planned for. Our Vietnam Experience tours include this incredible stop!

5. The best conversations happen whilst travelling

Vietnam is long. Really long. Getting from the mountains in the north to the beaches in the south involves hours of travel, and the instinct is to see that time as dead time. It isn't. Some of the realest conversations we've had on tour happened three hours into a bus journey, phones dead, snacks shared, someone's terrible playlist playing through a single speaker. The destinations are the postcard. The journey between them is usually where the actual friendships get made.

Selfie in Sa Pa

Vietnam rewards people who go in curious rather than just camera-ready. If you want to see all of it, north to south, without spending your trip stressed about logistics, our Vietnam Intro & Experience covers the whole stretch, motorbike crossings, crab fishing, gorgeous hikes, all included.

Come solo, leave with a crew.
