Next year’s shaping up to be a big one for travel. It sounds like a futuristic date, but 2022 is right around the corner. And it's never too early to start planning, especially when we all have so many pent-up travel ambitions.

The good news is that next year savvy travellers from the UK (sorry, everyone else!) could potentially pocket 54 days of time off by making the most of the Bank Holiday weekends. In the UK employees are normally entitled to 28 paid days of annual leave. By combining existing holidays you can create decent chunks of time off by using only 22 days of annual leave. This is in large part due to an extended four-day Bank Holiday in 2022 to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, aka 70 years on the throne. Cheers, Liz!

If you want to make up for the lack of freedom over the past 18 months, then stretching out your time to travel in 2022 is just the antidote. Keep in mind this is assuming you work a full-time job and don’t need to work on weekends.

With all this said, here’s how to sneakily (but 100% legally) maximise your 2022 leave

  • The first UK Bank Holiday of 2022 falls on Monday, January 3. By taking four days off (January 4, 5, 6 and 7) you’ll be left with nine days of leave , including the weekends.
  • In April 2022, if you take four days off (April 19, 20, 21 and 22) , you will actually get ten consecutive days off from April 15th - 24th due to the Easter Long Weekend.
  • The early May Bank Holiday falls on May 2nd, so you could take four days off (May 3, 4, 5, 6) and get nine days of sweet, sweet freedom.
  • For the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday, you can get another nine days off work by booking just three days’ worth of holiday on May 30, 31 and June 1. Thanks, QEII!
  • The Summer Bank Holiday will be on Monday, August 29th, so if you take August 30, 31 and September 1 and 2 off, there’s another nine days off for the price of four! Perfect if you want to travel overseas and end summer 2022 on a high note.
  • And during the Christmas period, December 26th and December 27th will both be Bank Holidays. So if you take December 28, 29 and 30 as annual leave , you can be on holiday for ten consecutive days from December 24th, 2022 to January 2nd, 2023. Not a bad way to end the year, hey?

In total that’s 54 days off work , using just 22 days of annual leave! Cheers to THAT.
